Since its founding in ****, Cal Poly Pomona students participate in an integrative experiential learning education that is inclusive, relevant, and values diverse perspectives and experiences. With a variety of degree programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, engineering, and professional disciplines, the university is well known for its learn- by-doing approach and Teacher Scholar Model. The university is noted for its scenic and historic 1,400-acre campus, which was once the winter ranch of cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg. We acknowledge that Cal Poly Pomona resides on the territorial and homelands of the Tongva and Tataavium people who are the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar. The university's nearly 30,000 students are taught and mentored by the campus's more than 1,400 faculty as part of 54 baccalaureate and 29 master's degree programs, 11 credential and certificate programs, and a doctorate in educational leadership.About the College of Education and Integrative StudiesThe College of Education and Integrative Studies is a learning community focused on meeting the present and future needs of students in its communities. The college educates students to become highly qualified and significant leaders in society. It is committed to the principles of diversity, ethics and social justice, and life-long learning. Central to the college's mission is innovation and integrative thinking, reflective practice, collaborative action, and learning by doing. The college's four departments include two undergraduate degrees and academic programs—Liberal Studies and Early Childhood Studies—and two graduate departments—Education and Educational Leadership. There are 1,376 students enrolled and 41 faculty in the college.About the Department ofLiberal StudiesLiberal Studies (LS) is one of two undergraduate departments in the College of Education and Integrative Studies (CEIS). The Department consists of the LS Program and Interdisciplinary General Education Program (IGE)—both of which highlight experiential or hands-on learning, interdisciplinarity, the tenets of a liberal education, and social justice and equity. The LS Program offers an undergraduate degree and is founded on teaching from liberal arts education principles and practices. The elementary education preparation option (Elementary Education: K-8 Pre-Credential) prepares subject matter competent candidates for a California elementary education (multiple subject) teaching credential program. The Interdisciplinary Studies option provides a foundation for students to enter careers in government, higher education, and the non-profit and corporate sectors and in fields like social work, counseling, law, and health, among others. See our website for more details. The IGE program–a student-centered, discussion-based, cohort-based pathway–offering a unique option for some traditional GE courses to expand students' college and intellectual experience through an interdisciplinary approach. At the heart of IGE lies the concept of an integrated core: a curriculum that explores human experience across the multiple perspectives of different disciplines. The IGE Program introduces participants to different ways of examining concepts and ideas, fostering a connective ability--a power to see all knowledge as interrelated. The program emphasizes learning in a community, writing, and applied learning activities and assignments. Comprised of a multidisciplinary faculty, the LS Department provides an interdisciplinary education for undergraduate teacher candidates and students pursuing a liberal arts-based degree in disciplines related to their future educational paths or careers in fields such as law enforcement, social work, and healthcare. The department pedagogy is student-centered and experiential (e.g., discussion-based, service-learning) meant to model the university's inclusive polytechnic identity .
